These were in the Mardi Gras Theater, a nice multipurpose venue.

For most, you need to have a plan as you can’t just walk of the ship and find things to do. In that way, it is a bit different than a Caribbean cruise where you mind find shopping, dining, and fun activities just steps from your ship. Since it is a long trip, we thought it might be good to have a little extra time to get used to the time difference before the cruise. It was a literally on our bucket list and yet there was always a reason not to go. Finally one day we looked at each other and said ‘book the trip’.

We watched the safety video at home before we departed. And, we were able to select a boarding time in advance. We hope to answer as many of these questions as possible. However, there is too much to include in just one video or post. We are creating a series of posts and videos to share what we learned and help you plan your adventure. We recently sailed the Hawaiian Islands on the NCL Pride of America.
In both Kaua’i and Kona there are free or inexpensive things to do within walking distance of the ship (or near Kailua Pier where your tender boat will deliver you, in the case of Kona). Our gift shops onboard carry everything you’ll need for fun in the sun. Shop from a variety of souvenirs, cosmetics, clothing, snacks and sundry items. Treat yourself at our duty free shops full of fantastic savings on fine jewelry, accessories, perfume, liquor and tobacco. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to your very own sweeping balcony.
Pride Of America Shore Excursions
Some rooms with windows or balconies have obstructed views and are noted in the room category. In some ways, the Pride of America looked brand new – especially in the common areas such as dining rooms, shops, guest relations, hallways, etc. The photo above may cause introverts to run, hyperventilating, to the nearest paper bag (I’m breathing into one right now!). If you prefer a more private and serene place to relax, hit the sun decks above the Lido for comfortable and more secluded lounging options. Look closely at the above photo and spot the tiny red fish swimming in the wrong direction near where the carpet transitions to a different pattern. Thankfully, the fish on the carpet on the Pride of America will point you in the right direction.
A variety of enrichment lectures, activities, and crafts will be hosted by the ship’s Hawaii ambassador, a local resident of the islands. We particularly enjoyed the flower lei making class, offered for free, that included plentiful and beautiful fresh flowers. We each made one and used them to decorate our cabin for the remainder of our voyage. Their lovely smell almost masked the stench of my gym clothes.
If your ship stays overnight on Maui, day two would be your only option for seeing sunrise from Haleakala. Most excursions offered through the cruise ships only go to Hana and turn around, but there’s much to see beyond Hana. We opted for a tour with Valley Isle Excursions, which took us well beyond Hana in a long loop back to Kahului. This rainforest drive offers lush, tropical scenery, a black beach, waterfalls and beautiful coastal views.
